Ultimate Travelist #263: National September 11 Museum & Memorial

The next morning we were up super early again, think 2am. While we were able to keep baby Kea occupied with toys, stories and getting ready, by the time daylight hit we were gagging to get outside. But nothing was open. We were staying not far from the 9/11 Memorial, so thought it would be a nice open space to explore.

When we arrived at the 9/11 Memorial we were one of only a handful of people in the area. This allowed us to take things at our own pace and get an up close view. Personally I think it really made the experience.

Wondering around the park I was surprised by just how different from it’s surrounding the space felt. Unlike most memorial sites I’ve visited, 911 was something that not only happened within my lifetime but I actually remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard the news. Having memories of the event happening added an extra dimension to the visit, and actually being there to see the huge holes where the foundations once were, which have now been turned into fountains, really brought home how many people would have been working in the towers. Standing there looking at the fountains I was overcome with an overwhelming feeling of sadness.

After a sombre early morning it was time to do something a little more light-hearted. So once baby Kea woke up form a nap we headed out for a walk and a spot of shopping, before returning to the 9/11 Memorial with papa Kea (when his morning of work completed). This time the area was packed with people visiting the memorial, but still that overwhelming feeling of sadness hung in the air.

Deciding we needed something different to take our mind off things we headed down to Wall Street, and through the financial area to the river. We found a lovely walk along the river front that gave us a great view over to Brooklyn and also the Brooklyn bridge

As we took our time strolling along taking loads of photos and admiring the view, we realised we had lost track of time and it soon would be dark. Time to head back and snuggle up in bed with a good movie to warm up.
